February is American Heart Month
FCMC - Making a Difference
According to a report published by the American Heart and Stroke Association, “Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics 2009 Update”, an estimated 80 million American adults (approximately 1 in 3) have one or more types of cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular diseases include high blood pressure, coronary heart disease (heart attack, angina), heart failure, stoke, and congenital cardiovascular defects. Cardiovasular disease is responsible for 40 percent of all deaths in the United States, more than all forms of cancer combined.
Cardiovascular disease is also a leading cause for lost productivity from temporary or permanent disability.
Know the signs and symptoms
- Uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back
- Pain that spreads to the shoulders, neck or arms
- Chest discomfort with lightheadedness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath
About one quarter of all heart attacks are silent, and the person feels no symptoms. That’s why it’s important to follow a healthy diet and exercise routine, and schedule regular cardiac screenings with your doctor.
At Floyd County Medical Center, we offer cholesterol screenings as part of our Laboratory Wellness Program, and to help meet the needs of patients with cardiovascular disease, we offer cardiac rehabilitation services designed to help patients recover faster and return to full and productive lives.
