American Heart Association On-Line Courses

The American Heart Association (AHA) offers a variety of courses ON-LINE http://onlineaha.org/courses. The following courses are available on-line; skills practice and test-outs may be completed at FCMC.

AHA Heartsaver Courses:

Successful completion of an AHA Heartsaver Course includes three parts:

  • Part 1: AHA Heartsaver online course
  • Part 2: Hands-on skills practice session with an authorized AHA Instructor within 60 days
  • Part 3: Hands-on skills test with an authorized AHA Instructor within 60 days

Floyd County Medical Center is pleased to offer Parts 2 and 3 for Heartsaver courses.  Practice and skills testing will be scheduled to meet the needs of each student.

The cost for Part 1 varies by course and covers only the on-line portion; this fee is processed separately through the AHA.  When Part 1 is successfully completed, students will print out a Certificate of Completion. This certificate is required to proceed with Parts 2 and 3.

The cost for Parts 2 and 3 is $40.00 per student for each Heartsaver course.  Exception: The cost for Parts 2 and 3 for the combined Heartsaver First Aid and CPR AED course is $55.00 per student.

Students are encouraged to call the Education Department (641-257-4317) to schedule Parts 2 and 3 prior to purchasing Part 1.

AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) Courses:

Successful completion of an AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) course involves a blended learning approach.  This includes:

  • Completing the on-line HeartCode BLS course content (including exam)
  • Completing the classroom session with an authorized AHA Instructor within 60 days. This session includes watching the HeartCode BLS video, skills practice, and skills testing.

Floyd County Medical Center is pleased to offer the classroom session.  This session can be scheduled to meet the needs of each student.

The on-line AHA HeartCode BLS course has a separate fee processed through the AHA.  Upon completion, students will print out a Certificate of Completion.  This certificate is required to proceed to the classroom session.

The cost for the BLS classroom session is $40.00 per student.

Students are encouraged to call the Education Department (641-257-4317) to schedule the classroom session prior to purchasing the on-line course content.

If you prefer, the following courses are available at FCMC in a classroom setting:

First Aid Course

The American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid class is offered to groups of five or more and may be scheduled throughout the year. The cost for the two-hour course is $45 per person, workbook sold separately.

This course is designed for people with no medical background and certifies the individual in how to manage illnesses and injuries across the lifespan (children and adults) in the first few minutes of an emergency until professional help arrives. Topics include first aid basics, personal protection, medical emergencies, injury emergencies (including bandaging and splinting), and environmental emergencies. Re-certification is recommended every two years.

Pediatric First Aid Course

The American Heart Association Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid class is offered to groups of five or more and may be scheduled throughout the year. Cost for the two-hour course is $45 per person, workbook sold separately.

This course is designed for people with no medical background and certifies the individual in how to manage illnesses and injuries in a child in the first few minutes of an emergency until professional help arrives. Topics include child safety, first aid basics, medical emergencies, injury emergencies, and environmental emergencies. This course also teaches tips for the prevention of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and prevention of the most common fatal injuries in infants and children. This course is ideal for teachers, childcare professionals, schools, daycare centers, and camps.  Re-certification is recommended every two years.

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)

The American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR class is offered to groups of five or more and may be scheduled throughout the year. Cost for the two-hour course is $50 per person, workbook sold separately.

This course is designed for people with no medical background and certifies the individual in adult, child and infant CPR and choking emergencies. This course also certifies the student in the proper application and use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Re-certification is recommended every two years.

Babysitter's Training

American Red Cross Babysitter's Training is offered each year in early June. This course is designed for boys and girls 11 to 15 years old. Students will learn how to:

  • Manage young children
  • Feed, diaper and care for infants
  • Understand behaviors associated with different ages of children
  • Communicate with parents and adults
  • Recognize safety issues
  • Make decisions under pressure
  • Respond to emergencies and illnesses

Cost is $45, payable the day of class. Handbook and snacks are included. Participants will need to bring their own lunch.

Childbirth Education

Couples interested in learning more about pregnancy, childbirth, and infant care are encouraged to attend any of the following classes. All classes are taught by experienced OB nurses.  Experienced couples may attend the last three nights of the class. Tours are also available for older brother(s) and/or sister(s).

2019 Childbirth Education Class Schedule:

  • January 10, 17, 24, 31
  • April 4, 11, 18, 25
  • July 11, 18, 25
  • October 3, 10, 17, 24

Each four-night class meets from 6:30-9:30 pm. Pre-registration is required.

Cost:  $65.00 for complete course or $50.00 for Refresher Class
Cost is waived for mothers scheduled to deliver at FCMC.
